Bristol County Registry of Deeds
Southern District
J. Mark Treadup, Register of Deeds
Thank you for visiting www.newbedforddeeds.com and welcome to the Bristol County Southern District (S.D.) Registry of Deeds located at 25 North Sixth Street, New Bedford, Massachusetts.
This Registry of Deeds was created in 1837 to serve the city of New Bedford and the towns of Dartmouth, Fairhaven, Acushnet and Westport, which were once collectively known as Old Dartmouth when established within Plymouth Colony in 1664. For those interested in historical and genealogical research we have the Dartmouth Proprietor Records, copies of deeds going back to the 1600's, surveyors' records and field notes and atlases, some of which may be seen by appointment only.
However, most of our records are used by attorneys, title examiners, engineers, realtors and homeowners relative to the buying and selling of real estate located within our jurisdiction.
Our efforts are directed at providing an efficient and courteous recording office and a retrieval system. Printed indexes have been consolidated and plan books and many deed books have been reduced in size for easy handling. Public access terminals allow you to locate your instrument going back to 1978 and public access copy machines and a reader printer allow you to make your own copies.
Those who subscribe to Titlesearch can access our grantor/grantee index back to 1978 seven days a week, 24 hours a day.
Copies of records are kept in offsite locations to provide safety.
Closing areas on the building's second floor and basement are provided for those closings not conducted in an attorney's office or a bank. The Registry's elevator and handicapped-accessible entrance are located on the north side (William Street) of the building, as are two parking spaces especially and exclusively for handicap-plated vehicles while at the Registry for registry business.
We have begun scanning documents as a first step to complete Internet access records.
This site will be modified from time to time and your comments and suggestions are appreciated.
